I haven’t updated my photo organization in... well.... ever. So I have backups of backups of backups in about 4,525,630 places. What do you use (FREE) to organize your photo’s, what is your preferred file structure, etc....

External hard drives. Specifically, the ones that look like white water rafts.

All I really do is file them when I’m messing with them. I’ll just make a folder structure like
Cars, Travels, Family, Personal, Random..
Then from there in each of those folders make a new one under that folder. Like in the cars folder, I might have a folder for my previously owned cars. Like Cars > Skyline, Cars > Civic, Cars > Mustang. Then just keep it that way. It’s worked for me, allows me to find pictures from a while ago that sometimes I’m surprised I still have.
I really don’t know any software that can manage pictures.

I’m currently looking into a large capacity external SSD. 2TB oughtta do me good for now.

I have a Western Digital 1TB drive that holds my “old” backup. I just got a new Western Digital 2TB drive that holds all of the “old” stuff, and is getting the new stuff.
The video work goes on a separate 2TB drive, and my documentary has a 640gb drive as it’s backup, with the working project on a 1TB drive.
I organize everything myself when I import. Event name or location with the date. On a busy weekend I’m adding 100+gb, so I have to stay on top of it.
Also, I’ll be adding a second 2TB drive this summer and mirroring the main 2TB drive. Remember kids, if your photos are in one location, you don’t have a backup. To say that it would be impossible for me to replace the “I couldn’t even tell you how many” pictures I have is such an understatement. Can’t go back in time yet, so $100ish for a hard drive is pretty cheap.

I use Photos on my Mac primarily, but I also use google photos as it has free unlimited photo storage at 16 megapixels. You can organize them into albums at your leisure. I like that I can access all my photos from my phone at anytime if need be. Plus, it is nice to know if all my back up drives died on the same day I wouldn’t be without my photos.

I take the google approach - dump them all in a common folder and use tags to sort them out. My wife prefers to organize everything into a folder structure, usually by year/month/day.
I used to use Picasa, but it has fallen victim to cloud-based services. Now I’m stuck in the same boat as you. Every cloud-based service I’ve tried either compresses the images or has gone offline.
Right now I’m testing out Windows Photo Gallery. It seems ok for tagging, but I haven’t figured out how to move files around or rename them for the rare times I want to do that.

For pure data storage HDD’s are (or at least were) better in terms of $/GB and in terms of longevity. SDD’s are nice for running programs from because of their speed, but if you’re looking for backup data storage you are probably better in terms of cost and reliability to go with an HDD.

I just keep stuff organized by event name or date in My Pictures folder on a 1TB data drive.
Regularly back up stuff to a 500GB external. I really don’t need much space.

Photos
Subfolder by years (2016, 2015, 2014)
Within every year, subfolder for the months I took photos in (01 January, 03 March, 05 May etc)
Within ever month, subfolders for the occasions where I store my RAW files( 01 Downtown, 02 Architecture, 03 Washington Park etc)
Within those subfolders, one more subfolder called Edited where my exported JPEG or TIFF files end up.
I move all the files into the proper location manually. Then, in Lightroom, I just right click on the subfolder one level above where I imported the new files and click Synchronize. They magically show up in Lightroom, and then I edit them.

I use Google Photos. Unlimited storage, being able to access them from all my devices, and being able to search for things like “ladder” or “linguine” and actually getting correct results outweighs my privacy concerns.
The search is really incredible. Recently I wanted to show a friend pictures from the time we went shooting at the range, all I had to do was type in “gun” and it found all the pictures. I didn’t have to remember which month or year we went or scroll down endlessly until I saw a gun.

I use my hard drive.
I don’t see a need for fancy programs to organize pics. My ‘My Pictures’ directory just has folders within it, and those subfolders within those are sorted by date and title of the event.
I’ve got one for Friends, Cars, Wallpapers, etc, etc.
